It is one of Kodansha’s best-selling manga franchises: by February 2018 it had sold 70 million copies worldwide (48 million physical copies and 22 million e-books).

The Titans

The Titans (巨人 Kyojin) are a race of gigantic humanoid creatures that serve as the primary antagonistic force in the Attack on Titan series. They were once slaves to the ruling class of Eldians, but after gaining their freedom, they turned on their former masters and now feast on human flesh. The Titans vary greatly in size and shape, but all share a few key features, such as apelike facial features, lack of reproductive organs, and an immunity to all known diseases.

The vast majority of Titans are mindless creatures driven by a primal instinct to eat humans. However, there is a small number of Titans who have shown the ability to think and behave like humans. These intelligent Titans are referred to as “abnormal” by both humans and regular Titans.

The Survey Corps

The Survey Corps (調査兵団 Chōsa Heidan) is a military branch of the Scout Regiment, and is in charge of outdoor reconnaissance missions to assess the threat of the Titans. They are also known as the Scouting Legion. The Survey Corps wear green cloaks as part of their uniform. The history of the Survey Corps is one filled with heartbreak, as it has been said that every generation has had its “bloodbath.”

Members of the Survey Corps go on dangerous missions outside the Walls, which generally end in many casualties. So great is the risk that few members live to see their 30th birthday. Nevertheless, soldiers join the ranks of the Survey Corps knowing full well what dangers they will face, in order to protect humanity and perhaps one day achieve their dream: to discover new land beyond the Walls.

The Military Police Brigade

The Military Police Brigade (部隊, Buddi) is one of the Nine Titans. Its members wear red capes and typically guard the interior walls of the Shiganshina District, as well as other important locations in the Walls. They are known as “WallPolice” (ウォールポリス Wōrupolisu?) By the 104th Cadet Corps. The Military Police are an organization responsible for maintaining order within the Walls. Members of the brigade are hand-picked by the government and must have outstanding records to join. It is a very prestigious position and its members are known to be rich and powerful. The Military Police have their own training ground and live in a separate area from the common people

The Garrison

The Garrison (ガレッジ Garēji) is the military organization in charge of the defense of humanity against the Titans. It was founded after the Titans first appeared and quickly realized that simple walls were not going to be enough, as even the Colossus Titans were able to break through them. The Garrison’s primary duty is to protect the Walls, with their main Headquarters located in Stohess District, Wall Sina. They are also responsible for scouting outside the Walls and retrieving information on what exactly the Titans are, where they came from and how to defeat them.

Public Reception

The series was generally well-received by critics, with the first volume having a rating of 7.92/10 on Manga Unicorn. It was praised for its elaborate story and for its insatiably curious reader. Charles Solomon from Anime News Network praised the series for its “well-crafted story” and “strong art”. He also go on to say that,

“With a complex blend of action, horror, and drama, Attack on Titan will keep you guessing at every turn.” Complexity was also praised by Jelscher from Unbeatable Review, who gave the first volume a perfect score of 10/10. They went on to say that, “This is a series that keeps you on your toes, with plenty of surprises in store.”

Conclusion

Eren Jaeger’s fight against the Titans has won humanity a reprieve, but it comes at the cost of much life and limb. The sacrifices of those who died to get us to this point cannot be in vain. We must remember their bravery in the face of certain death and use it as motivation to carry on and finally achieve victory against the Titans.
